Dis-Grace-fully Guilty

Hank and Carl were waiting in his office when I got to the police station. It was difficult to look Hank in the eye. Carl kept giving me meaningful glances, as if he expected me to tell Hank everything that Ben had said the previous day, but I was already extremely embarrassed. How could I tell him about Ben’s threat now?

“What happened?” I asked, my tone full of dread.

“He showed up at my house and began harassing Juanita,” Hank said, shaking his head angrily.

Juanita was Hank’s housekeeper, but he treated her like a member of the family. She gave him advice whenever he needed help and took care of him like a son, while Hank gave her time off to visit her family whenever she wanted, and she had her own room in his house. Their relationship was extremely touching, and it was obvious he was concerned about her welfare.

“Oh no,” I said in horror, “Hank, I’m so sorry… Please forgive me, I never knew he would stoop so low. How did he even know about Juanita?”

“I don’t know,” Hank said, putting his hands on his hips. “Misty, I don’t expect you to apologize. This isn’t your fault, I know that. But we need to take action against this man. You won’t let me help you, but I will not stand by and let him hurt Juanita or anyone else.”

I nodded, feeling as if my heart was locked in a vise.

“There’s more,” Carl put in with a sigh as he leaned back in his chair. I looked at him in horror and shook my head.

“What’s going on?” Hank asked, his brow furrowing in confusion. “Misty, is there something else you haven’t told me?”

Carl grimaced as I gave him a dirty look.

“Sugar, you’d better tell him, or I will,” he said firmly. “I was there when the threat was issued, and now that it’s become a severe problem, I can’t hide the information anymore.”

Hank looked between us suspiciously, and I wished the ground would open up and swallow me whole. I closed my eyes for a moment, then gathered all my strength and told Hank about Ben’s threat. The air became tense as Hank’s face tightened with anger. I had to sit down and couldn’t bring myself to look at him.

“Misty…” Hank said with a sigh when he saw my reaction.

I looked up and could see he was trying his best to manage his emotions.

“Believe me, I’m not angry with you. I’m mad at Ben. He’s the real enemy here, but we need to work together to get through this. I’m just… disappointed. I thought we were in a good place and that you were starting to trust me. Now I find out about all this? If you had come to me from the beginning, we could have worked on a plan together and we wouldn’t be in this situation.”

His words were kind, his tone soothing, but he triggered an overwhelming shame to rise inside of me. I covered my face with my hands as tears started pouring down my cheeks.
